ACCESS ADVENTURE VOLUNTEER
Katy Sconza
I am 18 years old and a Senior at Armijo High. I have Spina Bifida and have been wheelchair bound since I was
about 11 years old. When my mom told me about Access Adventure I was very excited to try it out. I love horses and lots of
other animals. I have had 14 surgeries and have spent a lot of time in bed and in the house. A few times I had to stay in
bed for 4 weeks at a time. Being around the horses lifts my spirits. I especially love one of the horses at Rush Ranch whose
name is Fanny. I love her and when I am with her I am so happy. I think that Fanny likes me too. I am learning how to
groom her and soon will be able to help train her. I am also learning to drive the horses from the carriage and give voice
commands. It is so much fun! Mr. Muir has been a great teacher and is so patient when teaching me.
I love Access Adventure and am looking forward to each time I can ride in the carriage, go on trips and
spend quality time with the horses!

Katy drives the horse carriage at the Fernandez Ranch, part
of the Muir Heritage Land Trust, during Ranching Heritage Day on June 23, 2007.
